The title of my paper is " The Translator as a Creator". I will dwell on the creativity of the translator in the translating process. First, I will detail the translational theories along the history, and I will find out the theories which can support my view, that is, the translator has the right to interpret and create in translating process, and the right endows the translator with the status as a creator. For the second part, I will adopt the poetic translation as my text materials to analyze the translator's creation. The translator has very special position in the whole translating process: he or she acts as a very special reader and creator. The self-determination of the translator should go through the whole translating process, and the literary creation of translation invests the translator with more freedom. With the affirmation of individualism, came the notion of the freedom of the creative force, allowing the translator to be a creator, whose function is to create the translation that can create anew the universe. In this paper, I will take the English translation of Tang poetry as the conveyer to support my own view. My specifying of Tang poetry to support my view results from the variety and possibility of understanding of Tang poetry. The variety and possibility of interpretation provides more freedom to the translator to imagine and create. If it is acceptable that different readers read different Hamlet from Shakespeare, we can say distinct translators can create distinct translation from the same original.
