Bullying was investigated as a group process, a social phenomenon taking place in 2 middle schools setting among 303 Chinese students(147 girls, 156 boys). Different Participant Roles taken by individual students in the bullying process were examined and related to a) moral judgment; b) empathy; c) temperament characters; d)belongingness to one of the five sociomitric status groups(popular, rejection, neglected, controversial, and average). The Participant Roles assigned to the subjects were primarily Pro-bullying, Defender of the victim, Outsider and Victim. There were significant grade differences and sex differences in the distribution of participant roles. Boys were more frequently in the roles of Pro-bully, while the most frequent roles of the girls were those of Defender and Outsider. The moral judgment , empathy , temperament characters and the sociometric status of the children were all found to be connected to their participant role behavior. The moral judgment plays an important role in the pro-bullying behavior. |
