As a family member of the Chinese proverbs, the proverb of Chinese martial arts has been created and passed down by martialists and other people as well. It expresses profound thoughts, describes complicated actions, summarizes important techniques and shows valuable martial skills in simple, vivid and living language. This sort of proverb is instructive, informative, descriptive and creative and undoubtedly an invaluable legacy of the ancient Chinese culture.The proverb of Chinese martial arts is rarely paid attention in the field of linguistics. When it is, it is usually mentioned with other sorts of proverbs. In the field of martial arts, people sometimes talk about it, but often in terms of the martial action, technique or other instructions. However, its beautiful language, with the excellent structure, wonderful rhetoric, smart wording, distinctive rhythm and musical rhyme is a treasure of legacy buried in the depth of the mountains, waiting for our exploring, picking, appreciating and preserving.Therefore, on the basis of others' study and research of Chinese proverbs, folk sayings and ballads, this paper undertakes to talk about the origin and development of the proverb of Chinese martial arts, particularly in terms of its language features such as structure, wording, rhythm, rhyme, rhetoric and so on. It will develop an argument,cite evidences to support it, and come to a conclusion--the proverb of Chinesemartial arts is deep in thoughts, simple in language, precise in expression and smart in ideas, which needs our greater awareness of saving and preserving.There are six chapters in this thesis. The first one is about the origin and development of the proverb of Chinese martial arts; The second chapter talks about the language features; the third explains the rhetoric; the fourth introduces the rhyme and rhythm; the fifth chapter deals with the structure . Finally the function and flexible appliance of the proverbs of martial arts are dealt with in the last chapter.
