Autism is one of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders. To date, no empirical evidence is available that explains the etiology of the illness; therefore, a medical cure has proven elusive, so the parents of autistic children feel very depressed. Current interventions have proven marginally helpful in reducing symptoms. Because of this, the parents have to adjust themselves to teach their autistic children. The major goal of this study was to know the process of the adaptation, to explore the effects on resilience, and to promote the resilience of the parents of autistic children. All eight participants ranging from 29-60 were previously identified as at-risk or high-risk based on a self-report risk measure. An in-depth interview elicited individual narratives about their understanding of their process of recovery. Analysis of interviews identified elements that contributed to participants recovery and resilience from their autistic children, with a focus on (1) a knowing of reality, (2) a building of perceived self-efficacy or sense of self-efficacy, and (3) the using of resources, including psychological and social resources.. Following the methodology of grounded theory, interview transcripts were analyzed and coded into core categories. Emergent themes relevant to promoting the resilience included of changing behavior, modification of cognitive, regulating emotion and exploring the sources of social support. Condition of knowing the reality was found to be the necessary element in the model of resilience developed here. Additional key themes in recovery and resilience were the building of perceived self-efficacy or sense of self-efficacy, which can both improve the using of resources. They have been interacting. At last, there is a successful case was introduced, which give more introduction to promote resilience.
