The national policy of enhancing polite letters while repressing martial arts in Song Dynasty led to the high development of social culture and hence the widepervading of painting & calligraphy arts into trie common life. Eighteen emperors since Tai Zone and Tai Zu did not take no great pains in collecting painting and calligraphy troves, of which the court collection consequently became ever-increasing and from which the social atmosphere predominantly influenced the cultural pursuit of men of letters , scholar-officials and even the whole societyThis thesis aims to examine carefully the general situation of official collections of treasured scrolls of calligraphy in Song Dynasty, and highlight the official work and act of great attention on collections. With the specific analysis of various collection sources covering all phases of Song Dynasty and the quantitative analysis and comparison of different scroll ages concerned, the thesis has tried to research its positive impacts on collection activities and calligraphy development of Seng and the fellowing dynasties.In summary.as the most preeminent ego lor the Chinese offcial collection activities in history, the official calligraphy seroll collection in Song Dynasty, in terms of either scale or quality, has exerted its outstanding significance on then both Song Dynasties and the following generations.
