This thesis is based on the status quo of design and research on residential district and public art in China. After some analysis and summarization, a new concept of Residential District Public Art Holistic Design is advanced while its actual feasibility and necessity are argued and some operating principles are put forward.There are two parts included. The first one is Residential District and Public Art, which defines both terms and presents their effects on modern urban development or developing status in China separately, thereby comes to the idea of Public Art Holistic Design. A more thorough comprehension is hold out. Public Art Holistic Design should be involved with not only the conformity of environments but also the whole course and the entire system.Founded on the former depiction, the second part imports Public Art Holistic Design into urban residential district, upon that enters into deeper research of Residential District Public Art Holistic Design. This part consists of three chapters. The first one is about the necessity of Residential District Public Art Holistic Design from the view of human society and Chinese residential status. The second one is some actual suggestions from three points of view. They are form conformation, public art activity and public art system. The last one then demonstrates the feasibility of Residential District Public Art Holistic Design and offers some successful cases.These analysis, summarization and depiction are all directed to such a conclusion: under the high speed urbanization and residential development in China, the research and practice of public art require a holistic system. Moreover, residential district, the spirit home of human being yet ignored by most contemporary artists, is expecting the intervention of Public Art Holistic Design.
