In his opinion, popularity and entertainment is the characteristics of the new literature. His prescription for the new literature is to give the healthy entertainment to the public. Xu Xu had a distinctive comprehension of popularity and entertainment. Centering the two key words, this thesis analyses Xu Xu's views on the new literature and the distinctive characteristics of his literary creations. As a popular writer of that time, Xu Xu and his works has an important influence on the literature history.The distinctive characteristics of Xu Xu's works has a direct relation with his views on the new literature. This paper is divided into the following parts: studies his criticizing text→analyses Xuxu's views on the new literature→deals with Xu Xu's novels, analyses how Xuxu's views on the new literature was fulfilled into his creation of novels. And then I comment on Xu Xu's views on the new literature and the significance of his creations of novels. Finally, I analyses how the gap between the Xu Xu's self-comment and his place in the literature history has taken shape.This thesis attempts to illustrate that Xu Xu's views on the new literature and his way of literary creations is an indispensable kind in the new literature.
