Among all the international relationships in Europe, the Franco-Soviet bilateral relationship is a fairly important one before the Second World War. Yet, the research on it is rather weak, there seems to be no monograph in this field in China. Thus thesis probes into the relationship during this period and discusses it in four parts.Part one, two problems are emphasized. Firstly, it analyses the French security situation in 1930s and points out with French national power weakening, the departure of the allies and the imminent invasion of the fascist. France finds itself in serious security situation, so it is extremely necessary to make alliance with the Soviet Union in 1930s. Secondly, by recalling Franco-Soviet relationship from Prussia-France War period (1870s) to the 1920s and analyzing the four stages of Franco-Soviet relationship before World War II, this thesis concludes that France owes a lot to the coldening of this bilateral relationship which is the main trends during that period.By elaborating the three manifestations of the coldened Franco-Soviet relationship, Part two points out the reasons which are relatively independent and interr'elated:(l)France holds a wrong view on Germany and Italy; (2)France depends on Great Britain unrealistically; (3)France and Soviet Union do not trust in each other; (4)Soviet Union has a worsening domestic situation and implements improper diplomatic strategy; (5)Poland and Romania hold negative attitude on this; (6)The Fascist Germany plays diplomatic tricks.Part three discusses the following impacts on the French security situation caused by the coldening of Franco-Soviet relation which makes France unsafe: weakening the deterrent force to Germany; offeringopportunity for the reconciliation of Germany and Soviet Union; making France rely more on the United Kingdom and estranging the other allied countries from France and Soviet Union which helps Germany to rope in and make use of them.Part four sums up the experience and lessons from the coldening of Franco-Soviet relationship.3...
