Color Word Study

We live in a colorful world. Everything in the world has its own color from the original form. Color has become the most important amis in many subjects' research. As to linguistics, color words are the main point. Compared with other words, they have very strong condensed strength, and become their outstanding peculiarities. Starting from the definition of color lexemes, the characteristics of color lexemes, and the pragmatic stratum of color lexemes etc, the dissertation want to give a systematic description to the color lexemes in the following five chapters.Chapter one, "Definition of the color lexemes". There are some researchers hold the opinion that color lexemes have the same meaning with colors, we have different viewpoint. In addition to conventional study of colors, a broad sense of color lexeme is set out, that is we should take into consideration about the subjective psychological factors. For example, when we see some words like "splendent, riotous etc", there are not any color morpheme in it, but we also can have the feeling about color. There are some words like "maple, peach", we can give them the name of "temporary abstract color lexemes", when they are used in some context, the color of them give an outstanding function.Chapter two, "Characteristics of color lexemes". The dissertation reveals that color lexemes are characterized by "non-native, fuzziness and systematic".Chapter three, "Color lexemes' culture connotation", the dissertation hold the opinion that color lexemes reflect the national culture through the associative of sense-making. Difference in associated connotations reveals the difference between different linguistic systems. In order to expound this question, we line up some basic color lexemes, such as" red , yellow, white, black and etc", make a comparison between Chinese language andother languages about the different connotations belonged to these color lexemes.Chapter four "The function of color lexemes ".As color lexemes have also ties with the physical colors, they gain an important function hi language utilization. The dissertation stress three peculiar features of color lexemes, that is color lexemes have "portray function, deviancy function and cognitive function".Chapter five "Color lexemes and some rhetoric devices". Color lexemes have gained their status as palette in articles, they play an important roles for the beauty of articles through rhetorical means like "metonymy, symbolism and exaggeration".To sum up, the dissertation draw lessons from the knowledge in such disciplinary as optics-, semantics , pragmatics and comparative linguistics, take an effort to illustrate the color lexemes from many-sided and hope to enrich the research of lexicology.
