Marcuse argued that, with rapid development of the industrial civilization in the contemporary developed capitalist society, people' s need to material wealth has already been satisfied; meanwhile, it also makes peace the persons opposing or unsatisfied with the social system so as to make them submit to the ruling class. Consequently, it appeared a total alienation in the capitalist society, from science and technology to cultural circles, from labour to consumer fields, from man' s thought to social psychology, and even from human beings to the relation between man and nature. Marcuse tried to uncover the social essence that people are dominated and constrained by the present social system through the outside appearance that is highly free and prosperous.
