The Analects Convergence

The thesis "Cohesion in Discourse" ,based on functional grammar and Cohesion theory of Halliday and Hasan and also my considerable extension,expounds four major cohesive devices and their important roles in discourse analysis. This thesis falls into three parts,six chapters. The first part,namely chapter 1,introduces the necessity of studying cohesive devices in discourse analysis ,as well as in linguistic research field;the second part,composed of four chapters gives a thorough analysis of reference,structure,logic,and lexicon and expounds how these cohesive devices function;the third part,chapter6,exemplifies the application of Cohesion theory in directing students in discourse comprehension. Many students often find themselves lost in discourse field,and have no access to solution. Cohesion devices dealt with by this thesis may turn out to be helpful in unveiling the difficulties and building up proper comprehension.
