| In the literary world of the early 20,h century, Ling Shu-Hua enjoyed the fameof an artist full of talent. Sl1e reached the peak of her career in the interval betweenthe mid l920's and the I930's. The characters in I1er novels are mainly docilemaidens, ordinary wives and naive children. Ling depicted what was ignored byothers in an elegant way and made her distinct contribution to the literature of thatera.In this thesis, researches on the ed of Ling's novels are cast in severaldivisions, i.e., mutual relationship between the two sexes, marriage and family, theworld of children and her x'Titing style.As for matual relationship betWeen the two sexes, by investigating theproportion of females with respect to males that were presented in Ling's works, Ifind that Ling avoided the depiction of males in her writing practice intentionallyand put more emphasis on the lives of females. This writing strategy is intended tochallenge the conventional Language of Men in writings..In her novels, Ling manifested her preference for tOpics concerning marriagewthout love and unfOrtunate family Thrugh this aPproach, she expressed her deepdisaPpointment with love and marriage, and revealed how these wonderful thingswere distorted by the society of men.Ling's novels featured the description of the naivCte. The child's taste and thechildlike innocence she revealed in adult's hearts reflected the ugliness of thedisappointing existents as well as demonstrated her evasion of the existents to somedegree.As a mature novelist and painier, Ling managed to incorporate the method ofwestem modem narration and the an of Chinese classical painting inio her writingartifice. She deemed serenity and sobriety as her aesthetic ideality. Consequently,her works succeeded to display some features of the family in her age. |
