The Choice Of Lin Yutang Prose Style And Creativity

The thesis provides a new angle of view and a new train of thought for the study of Lin Yutang .basing on the growing feafure and the changing of style of the modern prose. It also reveals the possibility given by the very prose style to the Chinese modern prose by the analysis of Lin Yutang *s stylistic choice and language style.Chinese modern prose style has changed greatly on the setting of concept ,the developing of theory and the writing practice ,in which many factors involved. First, as a practical style in the social life, the rising of newspapers and magazines provided it a space for growing; Second ,foriegn prose .especially English essays gave it rich nutrition on the concept ,the spirit and the style [Third ,the stylistical concept was set up through the controversy in the theoretical circle. The twobranches of prose-----Essay and Familiar Essay rose one after anotheralong with the changing of social and political conditions, because of their different stylistic functions . Zhou Zuoren dug out the "Personality "and "Leisure" from the essays of Ming Dynasty , and created a fresh style of essay. Lu Xun stood mainly on social and civilizational criticism .created a fighting essay .being a turning of familiar essays. While Lin Yutang chose a middle road:he carried on from both Lu Xun and Zhou Zuoren .accepting and rejecting according to his own cultural character ^easthetic senses and valual trends. He formed a unique style between the two and tried to set up his own theoretical system of prose basing on the three closely related aesthetic categoies-----personality ^leisure and humour.Viewing from the angle of stylistics ,Lin Yutang successfully created a unique language style in his prose works. According to the different features showing by this language style .his prose can be divided into three types : 1. Social satiric ones which characterized in satire and irony 52. culture critical ones which had a style of humour,, mildness and gentleness ; 3 . Life reflections which talked freely and liesurely. A talking style is showed in these types. Its main stylisticfeatures are dialogicalness in narration ^undisciplineness in structure and humour in language. Lin Yutang used the dialogicalness in two aspects :supposing a talking partner and forming the works in dialogues. This narration led to the undisciplineness in structure , but Lin Yutang successfully did it loosely but not broken,mixed but not confused. As for the forming of humourous language ,the demotional usage of words,the shifting of words,the opposite usage of words and newly-created words were maingly used by Lin Yutang.
