There have been many arguments in history in respect to the author of Principles of Filial Piety. But no further research has been conducted.Based on various documents, this thesis expounds this question from different angles. In view of the origin and development of filial piety and the book name itself, it is possible that Principles of Filial Piety was first written before Qin Dynasty. In view of its main idea criticize somebody's faults frankly this book reflects the social phenomena in Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period. Criticize somebody's faults tactfully could not appear after Qin and Han Dynasty since it was against feudal rulers?wills.lnstead could. Moreover, in view of the silk book unearthed from a Han tomb in Qin County,Hebei Province, we can learn some original looks of ancient Principles of Filial Piety. This proves that Principles of Filial Piety was indeed written before Qin Dynasty. In addition,The Lus Annals quoted from Principles of Filial Piety and the quotations were properly used in the context. This strongly proves that author of Principles of Filial Piety must have lived at latest before the author of The Lus Annals. In view of the comparison between the main part of the book and the thoughts, ideas and speeches of Confucius,Zi Si and Zeng Shen, it can be deduced that neither Confucius nor Zi Si was the author of the book, only the Zeng Shen's thoughts were in tune with the content of the book. As a learned Confucian, Zeng Shen was known for his filial piety. It was reasonable for him to enhance filial culture and finally wrote the book on the basis of the culture inheritance from his master Confucius. In view of Zeng Shen's social, historical and geographical background, he was quite possibly the author of the book. Finally, in view of annotation of the book (i.e. Commentaries on Principles of Filial Piety by the duke of the Wei state, Wen Hou, Zeng Shen had both the chance of meeting the duke of the Wei State, Wen Hou. the qualification of teaching Principles of Filial Piety in Stata Wei. As to the addressing problem in the book, it might be caused by the modification during its speading. Based on the above analysis this thesis holds that the author of Principles of Filial Piety should be Zeng Shen.
