Colour words from substance are words which gain colour meanings from substance Different languages have different colour words from substance The contrast research of colour words from substance in Chinese and English is helpful to reveal the general character of the language and the nationality characterIstics, it is helpful to teach words for the students of learning the second language, it is also helpful to translate .Therefore ,it has theorietic significance and practical value.This paper is about the contrast of 57 Chinese colour words from substance in Modem Chinese-English Dictionary and 64 English colour words from substance in Oxford Advanced English-Chinese Dictionary .It describes and analyses the source , formation and grammatical character (morphology and sytax) ,and finds corresponding relationship between these two languages.Morphology aspect :all the Chinese colour words from substance are compound words ,but there is only one structural type , all the English colour words from substance are root words .The parts of speech of Chinese and English colour words from substance is noun and adjective.Sytax aspect Chinese colour words from substance can be used as attributive ,subject , object ,predicative and complement ,English colour words from substance can be used as attributive ,subject ,object complement ,subject complement.
