AbstractWang Qiyao is the heroine of The Everlasting Rmpt, a novel whichwon for its author Wang Anyi the Fifth Maodun Prize for Literature. ThepaPer analyses the various causes leading to Wang Qiyao's tragedyexamines the social background, human relationship and the character'spersonality and tries to explore the universal imp1ications reflected by the"Wg Qiyampe" female tragedy It also discusses how the aUthor usesthe narrative techniques to harmonize its form and theme.First of all, the paPer analyses the catastrophic inducement on theprocess of Wang Qiyao's groed. Wang Qiyao was bom of a familybelonging to urban petty bourgeoisie, an unstable class full of impulses toseek freedom from any crisis. The frailty of ffiendship and her eXPerienceat the film studio made her taSte the inconstancy of human relationshipfor the first time, and aroused her strong desire to change her fate all themore.Second, the paPer anaIyses the social and historical root of thetragedy Wang Qiyao reached the brilliant peak of her life When she wasselected as "Shanghai Lady" and became an importan official's lover.Then as the time changed and what she ever had possessed was all lost,Wang Qiyao was reduced to an Urban outsider, rejected and engulfed bythe powerful force of the city bit by bit, until at last her ideal destroyed aIland out.Third, the paPer examines the human relationship conceming WangQiyao, researches the imPact of "Male--Centered culture" on theformation of the female tragic fate.
