《Fa Yuan ZhuLin》,100volumes, was written by daoshi-aTang Buddhist. It is one of the masterpieces in the development of Buddhismwhich contains a lot of books about Buddhism. This thesis is written aboutthe ideas of Buddhism in the lower class in Western Jin,Eastern Jin,South-ern and Northern Dynasties. It contains three parts.(I)The belief of Guanyin in this period. The people thought this spiritheld strong power. The belief could bring them good fortune.(Ⅱ) Karma and eternal cycle of birth and death of Buddhism. If thepeople believed this idea, so many problems could be solved.(Ⅲ)The belief of the Governor of Mount Taishan and the hell of Bud-dhism. Since Han Dynasty, the ruler of the hell was the Governor of MountTaishan. But in Western Jin,Eastern Jin, Southern and Northern Dynas-ties, the idea changed in due to the challenge of spread of Buddhism in Chi-na.The popularity of Buddhism was a result of interaction among manyhistorical elements. Karma of Buddhism was a teaching on the future, whichwas in conflict with the ideal of our Chinese people. In order to absorb morebelievers,Buddhists put forward a new theory. It offered a simple way tohelp the people, so many persons believed in it.
