The main emphasis in this thesis has been laid on the analysis of compliance-gaining techniques from the viewpoint of intercultural communication. This paper introduces in detail the cultural background of the East and the West, and some important theories proposed by American scholars. The author tested the compliance-gaining techniques of the Chinese people using the existing theories of the West, and compared the two from the viewpoint of intercultural communication, trying to find out the similarities and differences, and the most important, the underlying cultural factors. The findings indicate: (1) The choice of compliance-gaining techniques of the Chinese people is influenced by situations, coinciding with the research of the western scholars. (2) Chinese people frequently use reward as their compliance-gaining technique, or try to gain compliance straightforwardly. (3) Individual differences, such as sex, age, and brotherhood also have great influence on the choice of compliance-gaining techniques of Chinese people. Only several aspect of this issue have been studied in detail in this thesis and it is the author attempt to do profound, thorough, and systematic study on this subject in the near future.
