Since A Record of History was completed by SimaQian over two thousand years ago, a 1ot of people have beeninterpreting, illustrating, and studying it. A new climax in the researchof A Record of History has arisen since 1980s, never in history have wefound so many theses and works, such wide topics, such deep researchand so various resarch methods as we have found today. From the IndexOf the Theses and works Concerning Sima Qian and His A Record ofHistory compiled by Xu Xinghai, we know there have been 236 worksand 3300 theses concerning the book up to now, but there is no paperwritten from the viewpoint of sublimities in aessthetics. Therefore, theintention of my paper is to use aesthetics theory to anaiyse characters inA Record of History and tap the sublimities in them. The paper consists of four parts. The first one is the forword. Itgives a definition of the sublimity of marxism aesthetics, which istheoretical basis of the thesis. In the second one, the sublimities of allkinds of characters are analyzed in A Record of History, including tragiccharacters, great characters who had obtained great achievements andabundant merits and the characters who are sublime. The third oneintroduces the four causes of the sublimities of the characters in ARecord of History that time, the fine tradition of historians, theexperience of life and the idea of the variuns schools of thought and theirexponents during the period from pre─Qing times to the early years ofthe Han Dynasty. The last one draws the conclusion of the paper thatmany characters in A Record of history, according to many Maxismaesthetics, have sublimities, which have close relation to Sima Qian'ssublime personality.
