Abstract With the 20th century passing by, the tragedy is in a di1emma moreand more. In order to expound the aesthetic va1ue of the death imagery of theprotagonist, this thesis, from the death imagery that appears in tragedy often,discusses the relation between death and aesthetic effect of tragedy.This thesis consists of three parts:Firstly, human being's existence faces the death, which is the negation of life.1n the art text, death dispels the fears of the death in reality. Ail of which showshuman being's surpassing death. In the creative course, the artists feel theimmortality of life by imaginative faculty.Secondly, the content of tragedy relates to protagonist's suffering disaster. Withthe surmount of forms, the subject feels aesthetic perception. Furthermore, humanbeing's sentiment reaction is not only cerebrum function but also psychologicalfunction. In the action of appreciating tragedy, psycho1ogical blockage law acts. So,death is the catalyst of changing feelings of grief into aesthetic perception. Moreover,death heightens the aesthetic perception.Lastly, we discuss the aesthetic value of the death imagery. According todifferences of the sex of protagonists, the aesthetic value of their death is different.The death of the male protagonist ref1ects sub1ime in ethic sense; but that of thefema1e protagonist reflects week beauty in aesthetic sense. Besides, the different waysof death reflect different aesthetic perception.In a word, the happening of aesthetic perception and pleasant sensation oftragedy re1ates the subject, the object and the aesthetic action. Through appreciatingtragedy, we can make our life ─ force plentiful. And we can be fu1l of intense emotionto llve.
