Based on the specifically selected corpus, this thesis attempts to probe collocations and semantic tendency of "Gao", a frequently used verb in modern Chinese, using the way of the contemporary linguistics of corpus.There are five chapters included in this thesis as follow:(I) Introduction. This chapter introduces previously relevant research achievements, the research methods and corpus used in this thesis.(II) Discussion of right collocates. This chapter attempts to classify right collocates as five colligations (NP, AP, VP, S, and X), and respectively analyzes the semantic tendency of these five colligations and their sub-colligations.(III) Discussion of left collocates. This chapter attempts to classify left collocates as seven semantic notes:like subjective notes, negative notes, etc., and three semantic features are concluded on these notes.(IV) Added discussion. This chapter probes three translation ways of "Gao" in English, and generalizes the semantic tendency of selected English sentences, as the addition and further verification to the probes in the former two chapters.(V) Conclusion. This chapter sums up conclusion of former chapters, and points out available deficiencies and potential improvement.
