According to the related files of the Shanghai Municipal Archives and historical materials of Shanghai local chronicles, this thesis investigated Shanghai's Chinese crude drugs industry and its groups, and analyzed its business model, trade network and characteristics, to explored how these factors affected both this industry and Shanghai's economy.During the 1930s to the 1940s, Shanghai's Chinese crude drugs industry had played a vital role in the whole trade of China, in the early 1930s Shanghai became one of the six crude drugs distributing centers of the whole country, in time of the Anti-Japanese War, it rather than declined but maintained a momentum of sustained prosperity, and Shanghai became the largest Chinese crude drugs distributing center of the country. Reasons lied in many aspects, in addition to the stable environment Shanghai Foreign Settlement provided, both the cross-domain trade network and the cross-financing were also key factors for the industry's sustainable development. Meanwhile, this industry's capital group came from a wide range of the commercial circle, which could not be underestimated in Shanghai's merchant groups. Close geopolitical relationship also made the industry got a relatively harmonious labor-capital relation and rare labor disputes.Firstly, according to the data, this thesis constructed the spatial distribution, trade network and the diversified financing in order to investigated how they affected on the development of Shanghai's Chinese crude drugs industry. Secondly, analyzed the characteristics of the industry's capital group and its industry association, and researched the compatibility and collisions between the industry association with the government, other industry organizations and the society of Shanghai, to explore their ways of maintaining and social influence. Thirdly, analyzed the constitution of the industry's labor group and the function of their Labor Union and research the relevance between the industry factors and the geographical factors, and explore how it impact the labor and capital substantially, and eased the tensions between the two sides. Summing up the above, investigated the characteristics of the Shanghai's Chinese crude drugs industry and its groups can fill a vacancy and supply a deficiency on Shanghai's economic history researches.
