| Since the modern times, the port city of Liverpool had occupied the significant position in the Britain economic development and foreign trade. Its growth route was closely linked with Lancashire cotton textile industries, Yorkshire wool textiles and other manufacturing industries. This paper is made an attempt to discuss the Liverpool economic development during the 16 th to 19 th century, in order to illuminate the edge city which was built in the medieval and had been forgotten all the time, how to go through three stages of beginning, growth and overall development in the modern times, became the major port city only after London in Britain and one of the important trade port of the world until the early 19th century. Liverpool's rising, not only related to Britain's internal and external policies in each period, but connected with other factors, such as the urban businessmen were eager to engage in commercial activities and the local municipal supported its overseas trade vigorously. Studying on the economic development history of Liverpool, still can catch a glimpse of the economic progress and the change tendency of its hinterland, especially in the northwest regions of England at this period.In addition to foreword and epilogue, the main thesis is divided into three parts.The first chapter briefly introduces the early history of Liverpool, mainly focuses on its trade with Ireland in the British mercantilism era, and newly emerging overseas trade with North American and the West Indies. The 16th and 17th centuries are the beginning stage of Liverpool's urban economy. Of course, due to the effects of wars at home and abroad, its development course was not very smooth.The next chapter mainly discusses as the principally port for the domestic and overseas trade of the northwest regions of England, relying on the perfect internal transportation route and manufacturing development, passing through the Atlantic Trade and the Slave Trade, Liverpool gradually emerged in numerous Britain port cities. It was a crucial stage for Liverpool commercial development and urban growth at this time, its port facilities were perfected in succession, its trade objects and scope expanded widely.The third chapter discusses the overall economic prosperity of Liverpool during the Industrial Revolution. This section divides into three aspects to analyze, such as the port functions strengthened further; its Far East trade, especially with China; the development of Liverpool industry and finance. On the basis of overseas trade prosperity in the 18th century, Liverpool developed in every direction during the Industrial Revolution. |
