The crucial shift of J. Hillis Miller's literary critical theory is one of the most important points to the academic community. In this paper, I trace the developments of his conceptions about the ontology and several fundamental questions in literary study, in order to seek the inherent relevance between the criticism of consciousness in earlier period and deconstructive criticism in later period. Moreover, it might be important to treat his critical project during the fifty years as a whole, and it will let us not only understand his deconstructive theory better and more completely, but also realize unique characters of his theory profoundly.This paper is composed of four parts.Chapter One, "Introduction", discusses the development of Miller's critical career and academic study on his theory. This chapter is divided into three sections. Section One introduces Miller's transition from Phenomenology to Deconstruction. Section Two makes a survey of domestic and international research on Miller's deconstructive theory, and especially the critical responses aroused by his shift in critical direction.Chapter Two, "From the Criticism of Consciousness to Deconstruction", analyses reasons and process of this transform, is divided into three sections. Section One discusses the deconstruction of his metaphysics of logo centrism. Section Two maps out the difference between Miller's version of Geneva criticism and the work of Georges Pullet, which are keywords on Miller's crisis and also the crucial reason he leaves a school of thought to another. Section Three focuses on the relations between the deconstruction of the single narrative line and the criticism of consciousness.Chapter Three, "Some Basic Problems of Literature Theory", discusses several fundamental and crucial questions on Miller's literary critical approach. Section One discusses the change of the conception "Intersubjectivity" from the criticism of consciousness to Deconstruction. Section Two discusses Miller's view of "literary language", which has already shows deconstructive features during the period of Victorian criticism.Chapter Four, "Conclusion", summarizes the inherent relevance of Miller's literary theory during fifty years and distinct characters of his deconstructive theory...
