Ding-wu shortage, which firstly took place in Shandong,is a very tragic famine in Qing Dynasty. At the time, a large number of missionaries were in Shandong. In their eyes, Ding-wu shortage is a devastated and appalling shortage. About the cause of Ding-wu shortage, they think it is a shortage and also a man-made disaster. There are four forces involved in drought relief. They are missionaries, goverment, local gentry and the southern gentry. With their own purposes, they took part in Shangtung's Relief. From the perspective of power, the four forces formed a balanced pattern each having own role, while in terms of culture, you can see the conflict between domestic culture and foreign culture. Famine relief of missionaries paly an important role from governent relief efforts to the Charity. On the one hand, it has finished the state monopoly on cross-regional disaster relief. On the other hand, the universal feelings reflectd impacted the geo-awareness of the southern gentry and urged them to surpass. Then the national consciousness began to emerge. Ding-wu shortage has provided an opportunity for the spread of Christianity in China. For one thing, the people had an intuitive understanding about Christian by the relief of the Christian missionaries. For another, Christian offerd a spiritual consolation for the public in the panic. In addition, the relief of the Christian missionaries eased the hatred of the gentry and officials for Christian. For these reasons, it is not surprised that the Christian obtained a rapid development after Ding-wu shortage.
