The Amitabha Hall of Chongfu Monastery is located in Shuozhou, Shanxi province. It was first built in 1143 and can be ranked as one of the existing large-scaled halls of Jin Dynasty in Shanxi region. There are murals of Jin Dynasty graced walls of this hall, maintaining their original appearance and characteristic style. Murals are such well preserved that they have important historical and aesthetic values. This paper, taking the Jin murals in the Amitabha Hall of Chongfu Monastery as the breakthrough point, raises a study worthy of consideration. That is recognizing the Chinese traditional Strong Color drawing painting. This study is based on related analysis of the history, contents, pigment and techniques of the strong color drawing painting as well as restoration and copy experiment of murals in this Hall. This paper analyzes pigments and coloring techniques of Jin murals in Amitabha Hall of Chongfu Monastery using documentary materials, including Lijie Yingzao Fashi, Song Dynasty; Wangyi, Xiexiang Mijue and anonymous author, Yuandai Huasu Ji, Yuan Dynasty. Furthermore, on basis of reference on documents and the present pigments of Chinese traditional Strong Color drawing painting, this paper proceed restoration and copy experiment of murals in this Hall. There are mainly two significance of this experiment. Firstly, it can help restore original appearance of murals of Jin Dynasty in the Amitabha Hall of Chongfu Monastery. Secondly, murals in this Hall can be temporarily tried out as a teaching facsimile copy in Fine Arts Colleges. It will be helpful on the development of Chinese Strong Color drawing painting.
