Figure painting bears remote and profound traditions in the history of Chinese painting, and during its long development process, the character system has been constantly improved and enriched. As the most key part of figure painting, the face has always been thought highly of by the painters. In every development period of figure painting, aesthetics ideas and methods in different times brought about great variety of character styles. Regarding the face molding in Chinese figure painting as point of penetration, the paper selects the representative face during the traditional Chinese figure painting and the painting of social transformation period in the first half of the 20th century as subject investigated. On the basis of painting itself and pertinent literature and research specific works, this essay analyses the face from two aspects:molding and form by using style comparison; and the purpose of this paper is to make two aesthetic values more clear of two different character systems which contains tradition and modern.
