Prenatal ultrasound of fetal lateral ventricle enlargement is the most common found in the central nervous system abnormalities.Central nervous system abnormalities in the fetus at about 88% of ultrasound can be found ventriculomegaly. Diameter of fetal lateral ventricular is more than 10mm in any gestational age is considered ventriculomegaly. Ventriculomegaly is divided into severe and mild ventriculomegaly.Clinically severe ventriculomegaly is often referred to as "hydrocephalus", diagnosed by ultrasound easily, while mild ventriculomegaly can be combined with other abnormalities seen though ultrasonography, chromosomal abnormalities, and intrauterine infection.Fetal lateral ventricle enlargement will herald the structural abnormalities of fetal brain. Prenatal ultrasound may be the initial estimates of fetal brain development conditions and conducive to early detection of fetal brain malformations. Magnetic resonance imaging of fetal brain malformations can be further confirmed, and a necessary complement to ultrasound. The prognosis of fetal lateral ventricle enlargement varies considerably. Severe ventriculomegaly usually has poor prognosis; Mild ventriculomegaly, if combined with other structural abnormalities, chromosomal abnormalities, intrauterine infection, then the prognosis is poor; while Isolated mild ventriculomegaly (IMV) has better prognosis in which lateral ventricle width <12mm, unilateral, dispearing in uteus. The prognosis of IMV is related to the width of lateral ventricle. When the group <12mm compared with theā‰„12mm, the proportion of retardation after birth is significantly reduced. Since there is no common criteria for diagnosis of ventriculomegaly, neruodevelopment and intelligence after birth is difficult to evaluation. And the follow-up to school age is relatively small, children's cognitive and learning ability may be underestimated. There is a blank of high-quality post-natal follow-up studies, such as large-scale standardized multi-center prospective study with a view to arrive at more reliable conclusions to guide clinical application.
