Objective:This study explored the possible impact of chronically taking large doses of zinc sulfate on concentration of trace elements in whole blood for hepatolenticular degeneration children. Methods:Selected 21cases of children finally diagnosed Wilson's disease, and divided into two groups according to the time of taking zinc sulfate, less than 5 years group and more than 5 years group. Also selected 20 cases of healthy children aged 7 to 16 as normal control group.Measured the concentration of zinc, calcium, magnesium, iron, lead, cadmium in whole blood of three groups.Used mean t test as statistic anlysis to compare the value of the six trace elements in blood among the three groups,to explore the possible difference of trace elements value between hepatolenticular degeneration children with long-term use of zinc sulfate and healthy children, also the difference between less than 5 years group and more than 5 years group.Results:(1) Compared with normal control, less than 5 years group had higher zinc value (P< 0.01) and lower cadmium value (P<0.05), while the other 4 elements had no marked difference.(2) More than 5 years group also had higher zinc value (P< 0.01) and lower cadmium value (P<0.05) than normal control.(3)The total 21 cases of hepatolenticular degeneration children had higher zinc value (P<0.01) and lower cadmium value (P<0.05) than normal control.(4)No marked difference of the six trace elements value exsited between less than 5 years group and more than 5 years group. Conclusions:Hepatolenticular degeneration children with long-term use of zinc sulfate have higher zinc value and lower cadmium value than healthy children, having no positive correlation with the length of time of taking in zinc sulfate. And there are no marked differences in blood calcium, magnesium, iron, lead between the two groups.
