ID and IDA are popular nutritional problems in China as well as in other countries.Many indicators are reportedly available for the measurement of iron status, such as SF,SF,sTfR,SI,TIBC,TS,ZPP etc.However,lack of satisfaction of these indicators are widely recognized.BIS as a rather newly reported parameter for iron status has attracted attentions of nutrition researchers.This research purposely observed the BIS distribution and possible cutoffs in childbearing age women in Gansu Province.Subjects and Methods1 Subjects 155 volunteers of rural childbearing women aged 20 to 50 were selected as subjects.Subjects are from 6 cities of Dunhuang,Jiuquan,Wuwei,Dingxi, Pingliang and Longnan,Gansu Province.Subjects required to have normal C-reactive protein levels.2 Methods Each selected subject was assigned a registered code and participated blood sampling and measurements including weight,height,Hb of finger blood,SF, sTfR and CRP.BIS was calculated through SF and sTfR.The distribution and correlationships of BIS with Hb and other measured parameters have been analyzed. Possible cutoffs of BIS as an ID and IDA indicator for observed population were discussed accordingly.Results1 BIS showed a positive correlationship with Hb(r=0.702,p<0.01).Five groups of BIS divided according to Hb levels(â… :Hb≤90,â…¡:90<Hb≤110,â…¢:110<Hb≤120,â…£:120<Hb≤130,â…¤:Hb>130,Hb:g/L),Statistic data showed that there was no remarkable difference between groupâ…£andâ…¤,but there were significant differences among groupâ… ,â…¡andâ…¢.The results suggested that BIS level reflected the anemic status of the observed subjects.2 Correlationships of BIS and SF,sTfR,sTfR/lgSF and sTfR/SF were analyzed and BIS and logSF showed a positive relationship(r =0.926,p<0.01),but negative relations with sTfR(r=- 0.833,p<0.01),sTfR/lgSF(r=- 0.862,p<0.01) and sTfR/SF (r=- 0.830,p<0.01).The results suggested that BIS level could express iron status. The cutoff of BIS of Gansu childbearing aged women as an ID and IDA indicators was estimated through the tested data analysis.ConclusionsBIS showed high quantitatively coorelationship with Hb,SF and other indicator of ID and IDA and could be accepted an indicator for ID and IDA.As an indicator of ID and IDA,it applicated better than other indicators as not only can reflect the level of iron stores or the level of IDE,but also not affacted by body weight or metabolism.This research observed cutoffs and criteria of BIS as an indicator of ID and IDA. The results showed that BIS level could reflect ID and IDA levels of observed population.For Gansu childbearing aged women,BIS>6 mg/kg:there are iron stores; 4mg/kg<BIS<6mg/kg:IDE stage;BIS<4mg/kg:IDA stage. |
