Objective:To evaluate the prevalence, demographic and clinical features for hemodialysisheadache (HDH). Especially observe the clinic therapeutic effect of auricular pointssticking on hemodialysis headache. Methods:A total of 318 mentainance hemodialysis (MHD) patients at Hemodialysis Centre inNO.1 hospital of wuhan were questioned about problems with headache. Of these, 43were diagnosed with HDH according to the revised International Headache Societycriteria for 2003. Those with a history of headaches, including migraines, tension-typeheadaches, cluster, and other primary forms of headache, were excluded. Patients withorganically abnormalities which lead to headache were also excluded. Evaluate theprevalence, demographic and clinical features for hemodialysis headache (HDH).Observe the clinic therapeutic effect of auricular points sticking on hemodialysisheadache. According to the revised IHS criteria for 2003, 43 of the patients werediagnosed with HDH.They were randomly divided into two groups:the therepygroup(23cases) and the control group(20cases).The patients of therepy group were treated by auricular points sticking on for 3 monthscontinuously, subsequently visited for 6months.The control weren't treated withauricular points sticking on but treated with comfort, breaths, slower the rate of bloodflow, intermitter the hemodialysis session, etal. To observe and evaluate the immediate,short-term and long-term curative effects of theauricular points sticking on hemodialysis headache. The HDH patients was questionedon the disease-specific questionnaire for assessing quality of life in patients onhemodialysis before and after the therapeutic course. For each therepy and controlsubject, arterial diastolic and systolic blood pressure were measured before one HD session. Serum levels of BUN,creatinine, sodium, kalium, calcium, magnesium, albuminand haemoglobin were measured prior to the dialysis session. Results:A total of 318 hemodialysis (HD) patients,43 were diagnosed with HDH.And theincidence of HDH is 13.5% in the Hemodialysis Centre. The intensity pain in the HDHpatients was moderate mostly, the headache duration was 11(Q=10) hours. The locationwas the bilateral, frontal, occipital region or dispersion and so on.The total immediate rate,short-term effective rate and the total long-term effective ratewere respectively78.3%,87%and 87% in the treatment group with a very significantdifferences compared with the control group(P<0.01)After the therapeutic course, the totel KDQ score were added in the treatment groupwith a very significant differences compared with the former and the control group(P<0.01).Arterial diastolic and systolic blood pressure before the dialysis session in thetreatment group weren't with a significant differences compared with the formerand the control group (P>0.05).Serum levels of albumin and haemoglobin were with a significant differencescompared with the former. Serum levels of albumin were with a significant differencescompared with the control group (P<0.05).Conclusions:The therepy of auricular points sticking on HDH has obvious immediate, short-termand loge-term clinic therapeutic effects. And it may improve the quality ofhemodialysis headache patients.
