The rhizome of Zingiber cassumunar Roxb. is a traditional herbal drug in southeast Asia. In this dissertation, phytochemical studies on the plant were investigated. The chemical constituents of the rhizomes of Zingiber cassumunar which were collected from Indonesia, were investigated. As a result, 10 compounds were isolated by means of a series of normal and reversed-phase, Sephadex LH-20 chromatograph. Among these compounds, one compound is a new compound and the other 1 compound is first obtained from Zingiber cassumunar. Structures of 9 compounds were elucidated by 1D NMR, 2D NMR, ESIMS, HRESIMS, UV and IR. The new compound is identified as (E)-4-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-but-3-en-[(E)-4-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl) -3- butene-1-ol] ether. Antitumor activity of the new compound was assayed by MTT method, and it was shown to have potency in vitro against cultures of HeLa, P388 and SGC-7901 cells. A diastereoisomer of (±)-3-(3, 4-dimethoxyphenyl)-4-[(E)- 3,4-dimethoxystyryl] cyclohex-1-ene were also isolated from the extract, and the stereochemistry and conformation were finally analyzed with the NOESY.In addition, the advances in isolation and bioactivities of components from Zingiberaceae were reviewed.
