Objective:To explore the tongue character of depression, Chronic hepatitis B and chronic renal failure in different gender people and in people with different stage of the disease. To rich the knowledge of tongue diagnosis in the three diseases, and provide theory evidence in standardizing clinical syndromes and improving the level of clinical syndrome differentiation. Methods:This research was one part of the "973" program research-- Syndromes Standardization and Different syndrome differentiation systems. The research was about three diseases: depression, chronic hepatitis B and chronic renal failure, started with the basic elements of the tongue as the outline, the types of the basic elements as the order. It drew the questionnaire of the tongue, adopted the ways of clinical epidemiology Transect research, collected the patients'tongue in detail, including the color of the tongue, the shape of the tongue, the color of the tongue coating, the probity of the tongue coating. The research analyzed the tongue character of the three diseases and the distribution of the tongue in different gender people and in people with different stages of the diseases.Results:1.In Depression patients, The frequency of pale red tongue, thin white coating was the highest. The frequency of fat tender tongue was also high. Including all the non-pale red tongue, the frequency of red tongue was the highest, followed by dark red tongue and pale tongue. The frequency of red tongue, pale red tongue, the tongue cracks, yellowish white tongue coating in women was higher than in men. No matter in which stage of the disease, the frequency of the pale red was the highest in the color of the tongue, followed by red tongue. With the order of the stage of the disease from serious to mild, the number of the pale tongue, pale purple tongue, pale dark tongue, purple tongue was getting smaller. With the order of the stage of the disease from mild to serious, the number of the fat tongue, tooth-printed tongue, yellowish white tongue, slippery tongue coating was getting larger. Pale red tongue always appeared with thin white tongue coating and slippery tongue coating. Red tongue always appeared with yellow tongue coating and greasy tongue coating. Purple dark tongue always appeared with yellow tongue coating and thick, dry tongue coating.2. In Chronic hepatitis B patients, The frequency of pale red tongue was the highest. Some patients had normal tongue, which was pale red tongue and thin white tongue coating. The abnormal tongue was fat, tooth-printed and thorny tongue. The frequency of red tongue in women was higher than in men. The frequency of thick and dry tongue coating in men was higher than in women. Maybe this was because of more men had bad habits like smoking and drinking. In the mild stage, the frequency of the pale red was the highest. With the order of the stage of the disease from mild to serious, the number of the red tongue was getting larger, even dark red. With the order of the stage of the disease from mild to serious, the number of the thick tongue was getting smaller, and slippery tongue coating was getting larger. Besides, pale tongue, fat tongue, and tooth-printed tongue always appeared with white tongue coating, slippery tongue coating. Pale red tongue always appeared with thin white tongue coating and slippery tongue coating. Red tongue always appeared with yellow tongue coating and greasy tongue coating. Crimson tongue with cracks always appeared with yellow tongue coating and thick, dry tongue coating.3. In Chronic Renal Failure patients, The frequency of pale red tongue and white moist tongue coating was the highest. In the shape of tongue, The frequency of fat tongue was the highest. The frequency of red tongue, yellow, greasy tongue coating in men was higher than in women. In the mild stage, the frequency of the red was the highest. In the serious stage, the the frequency of the pale red tongue was the highest, even crimson. With the order of the stage of the disease from mild to serious, the number of the tender tongue was getting larger, and thick tongue was getting smaller. Besides, pale tongue, fat tongue, and tooth-printed tongue always appeared with white tongue coating, slippery tongue coating. Pale red tongue always appeared with thin white tongue coating and moist tongue coating. Red tongue always appeared with yellow tongue coating and greasy tongue coating. Crimson tongue always appeared with yellow tongue coating and thick, dry tongue coating.4.In Depression patients, the frequency of thin tongue coating, moist tongue coating, pale red tongue, white tongue coating was the highest. This indicated the Depression patients always had normal tongue character. In Chronic hepatitis B patients, The frequency of red tongue, dark red tongue, tooth-printed tongue, pale yellow tongue, slippery tongue coating and greasy tongue coating was the highest. This indicated Chronic hepatitis B patients had damp and heat inside. In Chronic Renal Failure patients, The frequency of pale dark tongue, yellowish white tongue coating, thick tongue coating and dry tongue coating was the highest. This indicated Chronic Renal Failure patients had heat excess and fluid deficiency inside. Conclusion:These results indicated that depression, chronic hepatitis B and slow renal failure had their own characteristics of the tongue. The tongue character was different in the different gender people and in people with different stage of the disease. Using the color of the tongue as the outline, the character of the tongue was coincided with the disease. The color and the body of the tongue reflected the Qi and blood situation of the human body; the texture of the tongue coating reflected the changes of the evil essence in the human body. Studying the character of the tongue had important meanings in recognizing the pathological mechanism of the disease and the cause of disease, and was important in guiding clinical syndrome differentiation.
