BACKROUND &OBJECTIVE: Five-year survival rate of patients with maxillary malignant neoplasm is low; the prognostic factors of these neoplasms were unclear. To analyze the local control and survival rates, as well as the reason of failure in treating maxillary sinus carcinoma, 92 cases treated between 1990 and 1999 were retrospectively analyzed. The treatment methods included radiotherapy alone, surgery alone and combined therapy. To study treatment and prognostic factors in patients with maxillary sinus carcinoma. METHODS: of 92 cases, there were58 males and 34 females, with a median age at diagnosis of 55years( 25 ---76years ),46 were squamous cell carcinoma(SCC), 25were adenocarcinoma, 8 were sarcoma, and 13 were other histological types; according to 1997 UICC classification,10 were stage II , 34 were stage III and 48 were stage IV; 18 received surgery alone, 15 received radiotherapy alone,59 received combined therapy. RESULT: Five-year overall survival rate of patients of ≤40 years old was 47.2%, that of patients of >40 years old was28.6%; that of patients with SCC was 26.1%, of patients with adenocarcinoma was52.0%, of patients with sarcoma was 25.0%, of patients with tumor of other histological types was 46.2; that of patients with tumor of stage II , III and IV were 60.0%,35.3%and 31.3%, respectively; of patients treated with surgery alone was16.7%, of patients treated with radiotherapy alone was 13.3%, of patients treated with combined therapy was 47.5%; the total local control rate was 52.2%. CONCLUTION: Early diagnosis was the key to raise the survival rate of maxillary sinus carcinoma, it was the best treatment methods by surgery with combined therapy, early detection and local control was the key to success.
