Objective: To study the effects of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) on the treatments of primary nephrotic syndrome (PNS) with glucocorticosteroid. Methods: 60 patients were randomly divided into a trial group(given TCM and glucocorticosteroids) and a control group(given glucocorticosteroids only).Indexes including general therapeutic effects, TCM indications, urinary protein, symptom intergral, laboratory tests and incidence rate of side effects of glucocorticosteroids were observed and compared after all the patients underwent a treatment course of 2 months.Result: The improvements of clinical symptoms and laboratory indexes of the trial group were obviously greater than those of the control group. For the side effects of glucocorticosteroids, the respective incidence rate of acne, insomnia, menoxenia and hypertrichiasis was predominantly lower in the trial group. There was no significant difference in the incidence rate of extremity cramps and Cushing's syndrome. Conclusion: The treatment of TCM associated with glucocorticosteroids has definite therapeutic effects. TCM does potentiation to glucocorticosteroids and its adjunctive therapy extenuates the side effects of glucocorticosteroids which can accordingly help protecting and curing complications and elevating the tolerance of glucocorticosteroids.
