Part Ⅰ Study on Direct Economic Costs of Nosocomial Infectionsin Geriatric PatientsOBJECTIVE: To evaluate the direct economic costs of nosocomial infections in geriatric patients, to analyse the role of geriatric patients played in the control of nosocomial infections, and to find out the key department and key sites of infection in nosocomial infections.METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted, data of 173 geriatric patients with nosocomial infections (not less than 65 years old) discharged from 1/8/2003 to 31/7/2004 were collected, from which 162 patients chosen to compare with 324 non-nosocomial infection patients according to the ratio of 1:2 on the basis of the same inpatient ward and primary diagnosis. The direct economic loss of the nosocomial infection was analyzed through the multiple linear regression modeladjusted for the impacting factors of age, gender and way of payment, etc. RESULTS: The medical costs of patients averaged 23129 Yuan in the patientswith nosocomial infection,significantly more than that in those without it (t=12.16,p<0.01) and there were 21.6 (t=11.25, p<0.01 ) extra days of hospitalization due to nosocomial infection.The highest part of extra costs was found in western medicine expenses and it was account for 46.89%, while other extra costs for non-drug therapies, laboratory examinations and beds were account for 23.84%, 9.11% and 4.58 % respectively.
