Myxobacteria are currently assigned to twelve different genera, Sorangium cellulosum is the only one myxobacterial species that can degrade cellulose. Myxobacteria are Gram-negative, unicellular, gliding bacteria. The principal habitats of myxobacteria are soil, dung, decaying plant materials, and the bark of living and dead trees. Myxobacteria, which are ubiquitous soil bacteria, are remarkable and unique among prokaryotes in their ability, under conditions of nutrient deficiency, to form fruiting bodies, whereby tens of thousands to millions of cells walk together in a coordinated fashion. Myxobacterial fruiting bodies show various degrees of complexity both morphologically and structurally.Till now, the most interests of Sorangium cellulosum are their potential capacities of producing rich bioactive secondary metabolites. Little is known about application research of their fruiting bodies. The principal purpose of this article is to explore the feasibility of myxobacterium—Sorangium cellulosum fruiting bodies as the novel medicinal bacterial materials. The following is the introduction of this paper:Firstly, some experiments were done to study the acute toxicity and genetic toxicity of the extract of Sorangial fruting body(strain So ce9882 ), include Acute toxicity test, Salmonella typhimurium/mammals microsomal enzyme test(Ames test), Bone marrow cell micronucleus test, Mice sperm abnormality test. From the experiments we can draw a conclusion that the sample was a substance with no toxicity and had no genetic toxicity in this test.Secondly, we had an experiment for elementary study on effective components of sorangial fruiting body. The ways and means of extraction, separation, and examination of the effective components of sorangial fruiting body were similar to the means of active-polysaccharide. The fruiting body was lipid- extracted, hot water-extracted, alcohol-processed, then polysaccharide components were obtained. At the same time, the lipid which was extracted from the fruiting was also studied. Itwas separated into four components by its polarity. The ingredinents were filtrated in order to find the anticancer angent and cancer chemopreventing agent. We found that ingredient 6 and ingredient 7 can kill tumor cell selectively, ingredient 7 was a strongly mutate-resistance substance, too.Finally, using IR to examine the ingredients we had screened out, and the IR fingerprint spectrums were established to provide the foundation for bio-activity mechamism of the extract of Sorangial fruiting body(strain So ce9882).To sum up, the work in this paper has established a foundation for further research on the application in drug discovery of the myxobacterial fruiting bodies.
