Astragalus Gui Zhi Wu Wu Tang Treatment Of Stroke In The Modern Literature

On the basis of records on stroke written by different doctors and the pathogenesis of Xue Bi syndrome, we put forward that Huangqi Guizi Wuwu Tang( Decoction of Five Drugs including Radix Astragali and Ramulus Cinnamomi), the famous formula in the book Synopsis of the Golden Cabinet, can be further applied to prodromal and sequela phrase of stroke characterized by numbness of limbs by TCM and Transient Ischemia Attack(TIA) by western medicine. Searching from CNKI with the key words of "Huangqi Guizi Wuwu Tang"(from 1994 to 2005), I got 276 articles altogether, and 213 articles left after removing reduplication and articles of non-relation. In these 213 articles, 368 complete medical records were concerned with "Huangqi Guizi Wuwu Tang", with 79 kinds of symptoms. Ranking the symptom by case frequency, I got the symptom of numbness of limbs with 265 cases, fatigue 176, aversion to cold and wind 117, sweating 93, cold limbs 77, pain body 73, pain of joints 65, dizziness 58, gloomy complexion 47, and poor appetite 38. The others were all below 20. The incidence of the top 6 symptoms, including numbness of limbs, fatigue, aversion to cold and wind, sweating cold limbs, pain body, and pain of joints, is 72%,48%,37.5%,32%,25%,21% respectively. The character of tongue and pulse: pale tongue or pale red (violet) tongue occupied 83%, white tongue coating occupied 87%, thin tongue coating occupied 63%, deep and thready pulse occupied 33%, weak pulse occupied 29%, and wiry pulse occupied 25%. Finally, I also referred to lots of literatures on pharmacological function of each ingredient in "Huangqi Guizi Wuwu Tang" and on mechanism of symptoms in each stage of stroke treated by "Huangqi Guizi Wuwu Tang". By doing this, I concluded that the effect of Huangqi Guizi Wuwu on furnishing qi and blood correlated with the function of regulating nerve-endocrine-immunity (NEI network), and the effect of warming and dredging collaterals related to the function of its improving microcirculation and coagulation of blood mechanism, and the effect of assisting energy to dispel evil related to the pharmacological function of anti-inflammation, antivirus and killing pain.
