Objective The investigation is to explore cognition, behavior and some mental characteristics of some citizens to SARS in Shanxi province. It is to gain objective data of SARS knowledge, and its behavior characteristics during the period of the abrupt epidemic disease in Shanxi province. And the study can provide foudations for the government to prevent disease.Methods Adopting the method of the random sampling of the whole flock, and choosing five areas, Changzhi, Loufan, Taiyuan, Xinzhou and Qinxian of Shanxi province, The research investigated 690 villagers, including 509 men (73.77%) and 181 women (26.23%). The study used an table named SARS investigation table which was made by surveystaff. The content had 3 aspects, that is 75 questions, and the investigation was performed by the students of Shanxi Medical University in August 2003. Each question had 5 statements of the reply and was numbered 1-5 among statistic handling. The result was processed with the software SPSS 11.5.Results The condition of cognition: As results showed, 75.7% of the village citizens thought that the virus of SARS spread over the air foam, and 87.7% of the village citizens thought the disease is a kind of disease whose infection is very strong. The 40 years old and the 60 years old knew the SARS more clearly than the 10 years old (P<0.05). 22.5% of the village citizens thought that the symptom of cough was just a marker of the disease. Compared with each ages, the 10 years old surpassed the 30 years old, the 40 years old, the 60 years old, the 80 years old age. All the other groups knew SARS better than the 80 years old( P<0.05). 22.5% of the village citizens thought that one had SARS even if he only coughed, 58.6% of the village citizens didn't know what is public hygiene. The mental characteristics of the citizens: The personal mental characteristics was the worry about the safety, reflecting one's endocentric worry. It was anxiety that caused the personal behavioral variety; the state of dismay did not arouse the changes of their thoughts and judgment. The community mental characteristic performance of the male village citizens were extraordinarily stable; The 30 and 40 year-old mental affected the other family members' directly; providing the related information dismissed the panic of village citizens.
