The whole paper has two parts:Literature Review and Clinical Study. The first part contains two chapters. Chapter One presents the latestachievements of western medicine on constipation and the detailed explanation ofthe concept,epidemiological observation,bowel physiology,etiology, mechanism,complications, as well asclassification, examination anddiagnosisof constipationbased on the general review. Chapter Two concentrates on the concept of constipationin Chinese medicine, the definition, biology features, causes and mechanism,diagnosis and treatment recorded in classical documents. Also, it makes a generalanalysis of the concepts, causes, and treatments of Chinese medicine published inthe past ten years. The second part, containing one chapter, focuses on clinical research. In thispart the author introduces the research methods and the outcome in the treatmentof constipation with self-prescribed Sanjiao Tongchang Decoction. 60 patients withconstipation were put into the treated group and the control group at random, andthe later was treated with Maren Zipi Pill. The result shows that the decoction hasbetter effect, up to 90%, and the comparison of the two treatments is (P<0.01). It is concluded that the treatment with the decoction cannot only relieve thesymptoms but also improve the colic myoelectric activity and colorectal transitingfunction. Meanwhile, it indicates that the treatment can bring about better resultswith neither bad nor toxic effects. The study also proves that the author'streatment of constipation is creative and there should be a prospect of wideapplication.
