Based on the clinical experiences of the tutor Pro. Jiang Liang duo and the study of literatures of western medicine and Chinese ancient medicine, the viewpoint that the treatment method of Xuan Fei Tou lie (which means ventilating lung, expelling and removing pathogenic factors from the exterior) is important in treating upper respiratory tract infection(URTI) has come into form. URTI patients were given the decoctions prescribed under the guidance of this theory and the clinical effects have been observed in order to expatiate and validate this method from clinical perspective. This dissertation contains three parts: two reviews about the progress of clinical and experimental research in URTI treated by TCM; analysis of traditional understandings about the method of Xuan Fei Tou lie; the summary of clinical cases study.Reviews include "Progress in the experimental research in URTI treated by TCM" and "Progress in the clinical research in URTI treated by TCM ",which summarize the investigation fruits in recent years. In the analysis of the method of XuanFeiTouJie, the understanding and application of this method by the representatives ,such as Zhang zhongjing. Ye tianshi, Wu jutong and so on ,of twoschools of doctors-the school of cold-induced febrile diseases and the school of warmdiseases, are concluded. In the third part, the observation of clinical cases in the Outpatient Department are recorded. 110 URTI cases are selected and randomly divided into two groups. The treatment group is given the herbal decoctions whose ingredients include Mahuang Jingjie Bohe Lianqiao Qinghao, while the control group is given the Shuang huang Han kou fu ye. Three days make up a treatment period .The results show that the effective rate of the treatment group is100 %, the average time of heat begins to fall is 3.75 hours and the average time of heat return to normal is 20.48 hours. This study proved the effects of the method of Xuan Fei Tou Jie and provided a new method for the treatment of URTI's superficial syndrome due to invasion of wind and heat.In the discussion part, the theoretic mechanism of this method's effects in TCM are analyzed, and the experience of Pro.Jiang's prescription and the effects of the herbs prescribed under the guidance of the method of Xuan Fei Tou Jie are discussed. Furthermore, the suitable symptoms for this method are pointed out. This study indicates that good effects of treatment of URTI's superficial syndrome due to invasion of wind and heat by TCM can be achieved if the treatment is based on differentiation of syndromes according to the characteristics of exogenous pathogenic factors, typical symptoms and the transformation rules. Through theory analysis and clinical practice ,the method of Xuan Fei Tou Jie is proved to be an important means in the treatment of URTI's superficial syndrome due to invasion of wind and heat. This method has the effects of both dispelling pathogenic factors and preventing the disease from aggravating.
