Purpose:To evaluate the ability of a -tocopherol to inhibit the proliferation of injected intraocular fibroblast cells. Methods:fifteen rabbits underwent gas-compression vitrectomy. After three days, they were divided into 3 groups and underwent gas/fluid exchange, the control group:0.5ml 0.75% ethamol in balaced salt solution. 50ugVitE group:50ug a -tocopherol in 0.5ml 0.75% ethamol in balaced salt solution. 100ugVitE group: 100ug a -tocopherol in 0.5ml 0.75% ethamol in balaced salt solution. The three groups also received 2.5x105 fibroblasts injection. Fundus evaluation was performed during a four-week period. The mobidity of tractional retinal detachment was observed by ophthalmoscope . Histopathology was performed in all the eyes after 28 days.Result: After 2 weeks, in the control group and two treated groups, mean scores of PVR obtained are 3.5,2.4,2. Alpha-tocopherol in saline solution delayed development of PVR,compared to the control group (statistically significant difference during the former two weeks p<0.05).Conclusion:Alpha-tocopherol injected intravitreally showed retardation of proliferative vitreoretinopathy traction retinal detachment.
