How to prevent and terminate incipient caries advancing, resulting in superficial caries remineralization? These are some problems to be solved in caries studies. By some screening tests, natural biology extractum, which had the advantages of low toxicity and side-effect, easy getting and extracting, was widely concerned. It had been proved that Chinese nut-gall could inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans and the synthesis of Glucosyltransferase, consequently affected the key points of caries generation, which made the Chinese nut-gall being a possible caries-preventing drug. Dental caries is the advanced stages of enamel caries. Dentin and enamel have different features in pathology because of their different compositions and structure. It is necessary to make thorough studies about the effects of Chinese nut-gall on dental caries formation, advancing, and the ways of Chinese nut-gall playing. We studied the the effects of Chinese nut-gall on dental caries in order to provide some theoretical data about Chinese nut-gall being a possible anti-caries drug.hi the present study, we studied four aspects: the effect of Chinese nut-gall extrac -turn on degradation of collagen in dental caries; its influence on mineral dissolution and deposition; its influence on dentinal tubules sealing; and the morpHological obser -vations of its influence on dental caries. Conclusions are as follows:1. Chinese nut-gall extractum inhibited collagen type I degradation, which could fix and protect collagen in dental matrix.2. Chinese nut-gall extractum enhanced the acid protection of dentin, decreased-3-the calcium dissolution during dental caries, with the effect superior to that of 2 % sodium fluoride.3. After treatment with Chinese nut-gall extractum, dental caries advancing was stopped, with a trend of decrease in carious lesion depth and different levels of mineralization in carious lesion surface and its sub-surface demineralized layer.4. After treatment with Chinese nut-gall extractum. dentin surface was covered with some crystals, dentinal tubules were sealed partially or completely, with the effect superior to that of 2 % sodium fluoride. These results support that Chinese nut-gall is a new caries-inhibiting drug with potential prospect, however, further research is needed to study the clinical application of the Chinese nut-gall.
