Alopecia is a common hair disease, which greatly influenced people? physical and mental health. Basing on the theory of traditional Chinese medicine and modern medical technique, a series of prescriptions were screened in mice. It was found that the Chinese herb preparation of complex prescription, SF1, was more effective on hair regrowth than others. So SFJ was taken as a subject to develop. Effects of SF1 on hair regrowth and dermal tissue were investigated in mice which hairs were removed by Na2S. SF1 showed significantly promoting effects on hair regrowth in mice, when it applied topically. It could increase hair length and weight, as well as dermal thickness and numbers of hair follicles. In addition, SF1 could inhibit dextran-induced itch of skin and xylene-induced swelling of auricle in mice, showing its anti-inflamatory and itch-relieving effects. However, it failed to prevent cyclophosphamide-induced hair loss. The mechanism of treating alopecia by SF1 was studied in such aspects, it significantly increased skin temperature and opening quantity of blood capillary, enlarged calibers of Artery and Vein, improved adrenalin-induced microcirculatory disorder of auricle in mice, it also protected against doxorubicin-induced skin ulcer. These results indicated that SFJ could promote the hair regrowth, because of expending blood vessel of skin, improving skin microcirculation, increasing hair follicle抯 nutrition and promoting tissue regrowth. This new medicine had no absorption toxicity, topical irritation and sensitization to mice, rats or guinea pigs. It was suggested that SF1 could promote the hair regrowth and had no obvious side reaction. It may be developed as a newly safe and effective hair tonic in future.
