The thesis is composed of two palts: Pharmacognostic Study of Arctium tomentosum Mill. & Microscopic Study of Chinese Materia Medica Using Computer Image Processing Technology. In the Pharmacognostic Study of Arctium tomenlosum Mill.: As a mean and a result, for the first time, systematic Pharmacognostic study of Arctium tomentosum Mill. is carried out from macroscopic and microscopic morphology, plant distribution, market investigation and chemical constituents, etc. Among others, the distribution of Arctium tomentosum Mill. is thought to be over the majority of Xinjiang area, and 8 constituents, i.e. arctigenin (I), matairesinol (II), lappoal A (III), lappoal F (IV), lappoal C (V), arctiin (VI), j3-sitosterol (VII), daucosterol (III), apart from arctiin are for the first time isolated from Arctium tomentosum Mill. species. Moreover, Arctium tomentasum Mill. is concluded to be one of source plants of arctiin and arctigenin. At last, a feasible suggestion is made, of Arctium tomentosum Mill. to be included in the Pharmacopoeia of China as one of source species of Fructus Arctii. In the Microscopic Study of Chinese Materia Medica, computer image processing technology starts: 1) A feasibility study towards automatic microscopic identification of powdered Chinese Materia Medica, on the basis of the manually performed, time exhausting and operator-dependent identification procedure. As an essential part of this study, microscopy and image processing extract digital image features that can be applied to a computer program. As a preliminary but solid step towards the automation, in this study, image features of starch grains extracted by image processing are presented as an example to show simultaneously the feasibility of computer identification and the incompetence of specifying a crude drug with only one index, such as a certain starch grain. Algorithms for other image features are therefore presented as the guiding methodology of the on-going research. 2) Study of microscopic identification for 8 kinds of Chinese Matena Medica, Rhizoma Chuanxiong, Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, Radix Puerariae, Fructus Lycii, Radix Astragali, Ganoderma, Radix Notoginseng and Radix Quinquefolii from tissue and powder morphology (accepted in Hong Kong Monograph of Chinese Materia Medica).
