Objective To observe the distribution and change of Hypoxioa inducible factor-1α(HIF-1α)in periodontal tissue and understand the role of HIF-1αin orthodontic tooth movement.Methods 45 male SD rats were randomly divided into 9 groups. Orthodontic appliance was placed between the upper left first molar and the upper incisors of the rat. Immunohistochemistry and image analyses were performed at 0h, 3h, 6h, 12h, 24h and 3d, 5d, 7d, 14d after orthodontic force application. Right upper first molar in rats as control group without force.Results HIF-1αexisted in normal periodontal tissue. Its expression in periodontal tissue increased during orthodontic tooth movement, especially at the end of 5 days (experimental group) and 1 day (control group) after force application.Conclusion HIF-1αactivity changes regularly and may play an important role in remodeling of periodontal tissue during orthodontic tooth movement. HIF-1αmay participate in reconstruction of the periodontal tissue in early stage and regeneration of the periodontal tissue in later stage.
