Dry eye is a kind of chronic disease which caused by the abnormity of tear's quantity, quality and tear kinetics. It has main symptoms of eye-dryness, photophobia, foreign body sensation and symptoms such as fatigue, blurred vision etc. Dye eye will finally lead to the instability of tear film and impairment of ocular surface. Recently, along with the widely use of Video Terminal and air conditioning, the incidence of dry eye is rising gradually. Many etiological factors will lead to dry eye. Etiology and pathogenesis of dry eye is still unknown. There is no effective therapy which is aiming at etiology. It is of clinical importance and social value to explore effective ways to improve the quality of dry eye patients'life. Objective:To investigate the effects of acupuncture and thunder fire moxibustion in treatment of dry eye.Methods:42 patients were selected from outpatients of Dongfang Hospital ophthalmol department from September 2010 to March 2011. All the patients were randomized divided into two groups:acupuncture group (22 cases) and thunder fire moxibustion group (18 cases). Data of tear film break-up time (BUT), Schirmer I test (SIT), cornea fluorescent stain (FL) and the patients'main symptoms were observed. Pre-and post-treatment in each group were compared respectively. Post-treatment information in both groups was analyzed.Results:Pre-and post-treatment in each group:(1)acupuncture group:the results for eye-dryness, foreign body sensation and symptoms such as fatigue and uncomfortable of red eye were significant improved (P<0.05) (2)thunder fire moxibustion group:the results for eye-dryness, foreign body sensation and symptoms such as fatigue were significant improved (P<0.01), but uncomfortable symptom of red eye was not improved (P>0.05) (3)The results for tear film break-up time (BUT), Schirmer I test (SIT) were significant improved (P<0.05) for both acupuncture group and thunder fire moxibustion group. But cornea fluorescent stain (FL) was not improved. The results compared between the two groups:(1)In eye-dryness and uncomfortable symptom of red eye, acupuncture group is better (P<0.05) (2)The results for tear film break-up time (BUT), Schirmer I test (SIT) between the two groups were same (P>0.05).Conclusion:(1)The patients'main symptoms were all improved in acupuncture group. The patients'main symptoms were improved in thunder fire moxibustion group except uncomfortable symptom of red eye. (2)The acupuncture group has some superiority on thunder fire moxibustion group in eye-dryness and uncomfortable symptom of red eye.(3) Acupuncture group and thunder fire moxibustion group have the same effects in tear film break-up time (BUT), Schirmer I test (SIT).
