January 1st,2010, China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA)is established. It symbolizes China and ASEAN has ushered a new era. The unprecedented opportunities have been brought about to China-ASEAN agricultural commodities trade. Meanwhile along with the changes of trade circumstances, there are some new problems and issues have emerged, such as challenges imposed to China by ASEAN, China's suffering in deficit in the bilateral trades. Consequently, there is increasing concern to the contradiction of complementarity and competition of China-ASEAN.As for the complementarity and competition of China-ASEAN, based on the recent data, particularly, the trade volume data after CAFTA inaugurated; employing methods of comparison and induction, this thesis devotes prove the complementarity overweighs competition in bilateral agricultural commodities trade through analyzing the background and growing of CAFTA, comparing the resource advantages of China and ASEAN as well as research into the interior and exterior conditions for improving the agricultural commodities trade.This thesis believes that the establishment of CAFTA will enhance the complementarity and bring the bilateral trade into a new era. Then this thesis analysis three major problems of China-ASEAN agricultural commodities: China's long term trade deficit in bilateral agricultural commodities trade, most of the agricultural commodities are at low end level as well as the limited scale of agricultural cooperation projects brought about by the trade. Finally, concerning to the three problems, this thesis proposes that China may upgrade its agricultural commodities so as to avert competition against the similar commodities of ASEAN and to enhance complementarity; and China should establish a diversified agricultural cooperation mechanism.
