Since the reform and opening-up policy, China has successfully realized its transition from the traditional agricultural country to a newly industrialized one. Meanwhile the development of globalization and the western countries'mass migration of manufacturing enterprises owing to their upgraded industrial structure usher in unprecedented opportunities for China's manufacturing enterprises. However, accompanying the expanding scale there come other contradictions such as a high input as against low productivity and high energy consumption. Along with the continual development of society and the soaring cost of local labor, Chinese manufacturers are gradually losing their advantage in having a relatively low labor cost which they have enjoyed previously. In recent years, the western countries have again marked the rise of trade protectionism under the impact of financial crisis. Sluggish domestic demand together with barriers to foreign export market put the domestic manufacturing industries under huge pressure, and therefore, changes in development mode so as to improve competitiveness have become a top priority for the domestic enterprises. The present thesis takes C Company as an illustration, tries to give a full picture of small batch and multi-variety production mode. Through reviewing relevant literature, it has introduced both the theoretical basis and the actual practice of lean production (LP) model. Detailed observation and comparisons are also made to present a comparative study of the large-scale production line and cell production lines of C Company. The first part of the thesis is devoted to a detailed analysis of the external circumstance that the manufacturing enterprises are facing, which is approached from the following four dimensions--customer, government, suppliers and competitors, in order to show the necessity and urgency of the implementation of lean production mode. The second part provides a theoretical basis and the status quo of today's lean production development from the aspects of Industrial Engineering and Toyota Mode. And then followed by the analysis part in which the status quo and the underlying risks of C Company are analyzed to work out the problems that C Company has encountered, in this part detailed data are collected to make comparisons between large-scale line and small batch cell lines in regard to production costs, productivity and manufacturing period, and conclusions are also drawn to illustrate the feasibility of implementing the small batch and multi-variety production (SBMV) mode in the company and the enhancement of its competitiveness thereby. Finally, it summarizes the lessons learned from promoting SBMV production mode and the experience of process-reengineering carried out for implementing SBMV cell production. With the above studies, it is concluded that the implementation of SBMV lean production mode is an effective approach to tackle problems of high-cost, low profit and long production cycle in enterprises.
