As globalization intensifies, a growing number of foreign pharmaceutical companies put their sights on China——a populous country, which market potential is amazing. Therefore, many large international pharmaceutical companies, for example, Pfizer, Roche and so on, will shift the focus of research and development in China. In recent years, these pharmaceutical companies in China's patent applications increasing year by year. This one has been more than a legal sense of the patent declaration, and also implies the strategic thinking of the patent as a guide to business development. Therefore, the study of the patent strategy of foreign pharmaceutical enterprises in China has great significance. So, what features in foreign pharmaceutical companies' patent strategy? What are their manifestations? Existing research on these issues have not explained clearly, therefore this paper will study these issues as the purpose. Mainly through the investigation, information collection, statistical analysis, case studies and comparative analysis of this issue to analysis the patent data of some foreign pharmaceutical companies which patent applications in China amount of several top-ranking.With the International Patent Classification table, combined enterprise to its own characteristics, summarized the various enterprise patent strategy, China pharmaceutical company could learn their advanced experience for the strategic development. Specific study as follows:Through existing research data, determine the detail foreign pharmaceutical enterprises in China's ranking of patent applications. Selecting several companies in top-ranking, for example, AstraZeneca, Roche, Pfizer Inc. and Eli Lilly Company, etc. Identified their name of the application (patents), and retrieve them in the State Intellectual Property Office's patent database from 2005 to 2007. Collecting information in patent applications text is necessary, extract the application number, filing date, open date, priority number, a summary of claims and other necessary information. And then processing this information, classification and statistics, make the outcome. And from layout of time and technical to analysis. The technical layout can also devided into two directions:therapeutic activity and chemical composition. Thus presumed the core patent product and related patent product of the foreign pharmaceutical companies in the Chinese market. And to study how format the thinking of the patent strategic, summarize the characteristics of their patent strategy. Finally, in order to provide reference to China's pharmaceutical enterprises in the implement process of the patent strategy.
